Historical and Modern Terrorist Groups by Type

Historical and Modern Terrorist Groups by Type While there is no universally agreed-upon or legally binding definition of a terrorist act, the U.S. gives it a good try in Title 22 Chapter 38 U.S. Code  § 2656f, by defining  terrorism as an act of premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents.  Or, in brief, the use of violence or threat of violence in the pursuit of political, religious, ideological, or social objectives. What we do know is that terrorism is nothing new. Even a cursory glance over the centuries reveals a startling list of groups for whom some form of violence is justified to  achieve  social, political, and religious change. Terrorism in Early History Most of us think of terrorism as a modern phenomenon. After all, many of the terrorist groups listed below rely or have relied on the mass media to spread their message through non-stop coverage. However, there are some pre-modern groups who used terror to achieve their ends, and who are often considered precursors to modern terrorists. For instance, the Sicarii, organized in the first century in Judea to protest Roman rule or the Thugee cult of assassins in ancient India who wreaked havoc and destruction in the name of Kali. Socialist/Communist Many groups committed to socialist revolution or the establishment of socialist or communist states arose in the last half of the 20th century, and many are now defunct. The most prominent included: Baader-Meinhof Group  (Germany; renamed Red Army Faction but defunct as of 1998)  Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)Red Brigades (Italy)Revolutionary Struggle (Greece)Shining Path (Peru)Weather Underground Organization (United States) National Liberation National liberation is historically among the most potent reasons that extremist groups turn to violence to achieve their aims. There are many of these groups, but they have included: ETA (Basque)Fatah (PLO) (Palestinian)Irgun (Zionist)IRA (Irish)(Kurdish)Tamil Tigers (Sri Lankan Tamils) Religious-Political There has been a rise in religiosity globally since the 1970s and, with it, a rise in what many analysts call religious terrorism. It would be more accurate to call groups such as Al Qaeda religious-political, or religious-nationalist. We call them religious because they use a religious idiom and shape their mandate in divine terms. Their goals, however, are political: recognition, power, territory, concessions from states, and the like. Historically, such groups have included: Al Qaeda (transnational, Islamist)Aum Shinrikyo (renamed Aleph; Japanese, with various influences, including Hindu and Buddhist)Ku Klux Klan (U.S.,  Christian)Abu Sayyaf  (Philippines,  Islamist)Egyptian Islamic JihadHamas (Palestinian,  Islamist) (Hamas is designated by the U.S. and other governments as a terrorist group, but it is also the elected government of the Palestinian Authority)Hezbollah (Hezbollah is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and other governments, but others argue it should be considered a movement, rather than a terrorist group) State Terrorism Most states and transnational organizations (like the United Nations) define terrorists as non-state actors. This is often a highly contentious issue, and there are long-standing debates in the international sphere over a few states in particular. For instance, Iran and other Islamic states have long accused Israel of supporting terrorist acts in the surrounding settlements, Gaza, and elsewhere. Israel, on the other hand, contends it is fighting for its right to exist free of terror.  There are some states or state actions in history over which theres no dispute, though, such as in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia.

Advice for Finding a Private School Teaching Job

Advice for Finding a Private School Teaching Job Cornelia and Jim Iredell run Independent School Placement, which matches educators with independent schools in New York City, its suburbs, and New Jersey. The company was founded in 1987. We asked Cornelia Iredell her advice for teachers and teacher candidates. Here’s what she had to say: What do private schools look for in teacher applicants? These days, just as much as advanced degrees and familiarity with independent schools, independent schools look for experience in the classroom. It used to be 25 years ago that if you went to a wonderful college, you could walk into an independent school and start teaching. That’s not true these days, except perhaps in the suburbs in Connecticut and New Jersey. In New York City independent schools, the position open to people with that background is the assistant teacher in elementary grades. It’s the easiest entry-level position. You need a strong undergraduate degree and some experience working with children. The more academic schools really look for someone who’s had more professional experience and who’s halfway through a master’s or done some student teaching. Even that is more difficult for someone with a B.A. Schools will make an exception for an alumna or alumnus sometimes. Why is prior teaching experience so important? One of the situations that teachers in independent schools may face is a parent asking why a student isn’t getting an â€Å"A.† Kids will complain too if the teacher doesn’t have experience. The schools want to make sure the teacher is prepared to deal with these types of situations. On the other hand, teacher candidates shouldn’t worry about where they got their degrees. Some schools are known for certain programs, and these schools aren’t necessarily top tier or Ivy League. People will sit up and take notice at all kinds of schools around the country. What is your advice for mid-career people looking to transition? For the mid-career person, these schools have an individualized process. The schools may be looking for someone with professional experience. They may be looking for someone who can do something else, such as development. A career changer can find a job in an independent school. We see an increasing number of career changers who are tired of doing what they are doing. Now, we’re more frequently getting candidates who have done some graduate work in the field. We’ve had people do the New York City Teaching Fellows program even if they’re interested in independent schools, so they can get hands-on training. What is your advice for jobseekers? Get experience in some way. If you are a recent grad, do Teach for America or the NYC Teaching Fellows program. If you can put up with being in a difficult school, it can be an eye-opener. People will take you seriously. You can also try to find a position in a boarding school or another part of the country, where it is more difficult to find the ideal teacher. Boarding schools are more open to intern teachers. They give you a lot of mentoring. It’s a wonderful experience. In addition, write a good cover letter and resume. Some of the cover letters and resumes we see are in poor shape these days. People don’t know how to structure a cover letter introducing themselves. People present themselves badly and praise themselves in the letter and overstate their experience. Instead, keep it brief and factual. Can public school teachers transition to private schools? Yes, they can! Certainly there are lower school teachers who’ve been head teachers in public elementary schools. If it’s someone who’s been tied to testing and a Regents curriculum, it’s harder. If you are coming from a public school, become more familiar with independent schools. Sit in classes, and get an idea of what the expectations are and what the classroom dynamic is. What helps teachers  be successful once in schools? A good mentoring program helps people. Some schools have a more formal one, while some are more informal. Have not only a mentor in your own teaching department, but have someone perhaps in a different area who is not tied in with commenting on how you are teaching your subject and can give you feedback on how you are relating to your students. Being a subject matter expert and a good teacher are both important, particularly in the upper school. Again, that’s part of the importance of the style of the person fitting in with the school. Teachers are always nervous about the demo lesson they have to do as candidates. It’s an artificial situation. What the schools are looking at is the style of the teacher, whether the teacher connects with the class. It’s important to engage the students. Are there any particular areas of growth? Independent schools are always evolving and working to stay at the forefront of learning and education. They are constantly reevaluating their curriculum, even the best schools. Many schools offer a global emphasis in many areas in the curriculum and a greater movement towards interdisciplinary work. There is also a move towards a student-centered approach and modern skills and learning methods. Real world experience is also becoming increasingly important, as are skills in technology, design thinking, entrepreneurship and more, so teachers with life experience might find themselves at the top of the resume pile.

Cultural Music Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Cultural Music - Essay Example What we are going to explore in this paper are the values, cultural music uphold, its historical significance, where it came from and the factors that distinguishes the cultural music from that of popular culture. We would put light across factors like religious rituals, social rituals, materialism and how it developed. Cultural value becomes a relative idea today because it is everywhere turned into something quantifiable, as the principle of exchange value (i.e., price) is extended into all spheres of life. Music when considered on a broad spectrum, is an art, and the value of art becomes a shifting term in an economy of cultural meanings, defined by its relation to other signifying elements in the cultural system, not to anything "real" to which it might ultimately refer. But when it comes to musical judgments, cultures are never explored in the context of social values. Though the formation of "taste cultures" has always been socially defined. Participation in certain genres of music say, grand opera, street ballads, or rural folk music was historically determined by a person's social position, not by a purely independent aesthetic choice. Indeed, from a sociological perspective, cultural taste is always a social category rather than an aesthetic one; it refers to the way we use cultural judgments as social "currency, " to mark our social positions. This may be less clear today, since contemporary society is characterized by the fragmentation of older taste cultures and the proliferation of new ones. In this context, cultural musical transactions take place with increasing rapidity hence the heating up of the cultural economy and its rapid turnover of new products. Not only are taste cultures themselves shifting, but people now tend to move between them with greater ease. These factors contribute to a sense of the relativity of any single position. Contemporary musical choices enable us to make selection from among umpteen choices, such choices refer to the pluralism, and the effect of that plurality is inevitably to confirm that, in matters of musical judgment, the individual can be the only authority. (Johnson, 2002, p. 7) Musician Perception Musicians are perceived as "speaking on behalf" of the cultures they perform. As Harnish says, "For those of us teaching in geographic areas of little diversity, we are charged with or charge ourselves with the task of representing the music and culture of the ensemble". (Solis, 2004, p. 14) Debate about music, even technical debate between musicians, has always been an attempt to wrestle with this conundrum: music flows from individuals to other individuals and yet seems to be shaped by supra individual forces. The basic model of that conundrum does not change. Music teachers, however, are the only

Current Strategy of Ikea Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Current Strategy of Ikea - Essay Example This paper puts into perspective the various current strategies employed by IKEA. IKEA’s current strategy is focused on low cost of operations. Case in point is that the company assembles most of its products on a self-assembly basis. This strategy is critical for the company because it helps in cutting transportation and operational cost. The company also uses the strategy to focus on the middle class on each segment of the market (Palepu et al., 2012). IKEA has a strategy that has immense cultural orientations. Case in point is that the company’s advertisement program has attention catching elements that make its products salable to a wide range of customers. Essentially, IKEA does not focus its attention on the mass market, but rather concentrates on marketing approaches that target individuals. The market in the current dispensation is increasingly competitive, and IKEA has sought to establish mechanisms that can ensure continual relevance in the market. Ideally, the company’s current strategy is more quality oriented (Elliott et al., 88). Quality defines the products that a company deals with and fundamentally distinguishes it from the competitors. IKEA has become bullish in the market due to its quality furniture that is characterized by uniqueness. Another current strategy that IKEA focuses on is the diversification of its products (Elliott et al., 212). The Company does not just focus on the mainstream furniture products, but also concentrates on childrens products. Additionally, the company produces customized products for its clients as a consequence of meeting their needs and expectations. IKEA has an advertisement strategy that has limited orientation in the international market (Daft et al., 234). Case in point is that the promotional strategy adopted by IKEA is based on catalogues. The current strategies that have been adopted by the company have

Guns Germs and Steel Essay Example for Free

Guns Germs and Steel Essay Yali asked the question of â€Å"why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had so little cargo of our own?† (Diamond 14) In other words, he is asking â€Å"what is the factor between our people and ours that causes human development to proceed at different rates?† (Diamond 16) What Yali is really asking though, is, what is this mysterious factor? According to Diamond, the basis for development is the environment around us including the resources and the native people of New Guinea don’t live in an area where a chance is provided for them to take advantage of. The natural resources are just enough for them to get by. This is why the people of New Guinea produce so little â€Å"cargo† of their own. Pizarro’s capture of Atahuallpa and destruction of the Incas made the Europeans realize what power they head, and what they could do to the rest of the world. They easily wiped out the Inca’s of 80,000 with 168 men. From the Battle of Cajamarca, Pizzaro came back to Charles I saying that Europe had the power to conquer the Americas. There were reasons Pizarro and the Europeans could conquer the Americas†¦ They had better warfare than the Incas. Pizarro’s men had armor rode horseback and used steel compared to their wooden weapons. Eurasia happened to have an abundance of edible material because of the right environment leading to the domestication of plants and animals led the people to settle down in one place instead of being nomads. When people started to settle down and bring the food to them, they started to have a surplus which led for the people to have extra jobs and it started to also support a higher population while allowing women to have more children contributing to job specialization. These specialists were not devoted to farmers or food producers but varied to priests, blacksmiths etc. Permanent agriculture societies were able to from with the food surpluses leading to empires. Some of the reason that people began to settle down and farm are because at the time many wild foods began to decrease due to hunters and gatherers killing off too many large animals leaving life unsustainable. More wild plants that could be domesticated became available at the time. Technological advances allowe3d people to harvest and store greater amounts of food that they cultivated. Human populations rose it’s not clear how much it caused food production and how much food production caused it but researchers believe there’s a connection. As populations rose, they needed to have better food supplies and started farming. The farm societies were able to drive out neighboring hunter-gatherers. A continent with long east-west axis like (Eurasia) has an advantage over continents with long north-south axes (like Africa and the Americas). The reasons it does have to do with crops and longitude. In general similar crops can grow at similar longitudes. In other words a cropped that developed in one place can be spread east to west (or west to east) but less likely to spread north and south. Epidemic diseases developed among the societies that had been farming the longest. These were Eurasian societies. Societies in the Americas, Australia, and other places had not been farming as long and lacked epidemic diseases. When Europeans came in contact with Native Americans, for example, European epidemic diseases killed huge percentages of the Native Americans. This helped the Europeans conquer and the conquest made them richer and more powerful. Therefore germs help to answer Yalis question. The societies that did independently invent writing were those with complex hierarchies and so phisticated systems of food production. Writing was needed for politics and was generally learned by bureaucrats who had the comfort of available time and energy. As food was available to them, they had no need to hunt and gather for themselves. Since their basic needs were being met, they could focus on a higher level of existence and communication. There are two conditions in which technology may develop. The first is â€Å"mother necessity ideology† which is when a society needs something to make things easier they invent it. Technology differed from place to place because there were more people to invent and better diffusion to spread the invention. The opposite happened in the Americas because there were less people and a slower diffusion rate. Also different cultures had different ideas for change. The only way that society can emerge is through food. Such developments include jobs, such as the chief and the beginnings of government. The institutions of society changed over time based on how organized they were. They evolved based around various factors like war and other societies. They are related by diffusion. Whenever a state is conquered by another state they enforce use of their technology or exploit it. States are going to develop weapons, troops, and religion in order to make the state survive. They develop in response to need of their population size. They use these agents of conquest to become larger and to conquer other societies; and for that they need guns, germs, and steel. What Diamond is saying is that he thinks that people really should not think that history is so much different from the sciences. He is saying that the study of history can be pretty scientific if it is done correctly (and that some sciences are not as precise as things like chemistry). Diamond is trying to argue that historians should use what he calls natural experiments. He thinks that there are many experiments where there are two or more places that are pretty similar in many ways but which then turned out differently (like his experiment in Chapter 2). He argues that historians can use these they can look at what was different and what was similar and how the differences led to the differences in the outcomes. Guns, Germs, and Steel Book Review I think Diamond’s central intent of writing the book is to explain how varying societies become dominate, and how certain others can become dominated. By looking at environmental conditions that caused the disparities that lead to certain societies developing guns, germs, and steel, including other technology, and forming a government necessary for conquest. He introduced the book with Yali’s question â€Å"Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people has so little cargo of our own?† This question used a scientific/geographic background, and set his intent is to answer the question or inform how to answer the question. He also tries to analyze the causes of the expansion of civilizations’ in some parts of the world, since all people are physically the same what could cause some to be successful and others to die? He used archaeological and historical case studies and evidence from genetics and linguistics, he argued that technological and gaps in power are not caused by race or culture differences but by environmental differences, He used the idea of the axis as one saying that Eurasia had an east to west (or west to east) therefore having an advantage over Africa or the Americas for instance, because crops could grow at the same longitude but it was more difficult as they went north and south. Also when cultural or genetic differences have favored Eurasians like for example written language or resistance to epidemic diseases he says these advantages occurred because of the influence and geography on societies and cultures and were not inherited as genes from Eurasian ancestors. Diamonds book argues that the differences in progress for different societies around the world do not result from one group being smarter or more resourceful than another. Rather, he focuses on the impact of geography whether food and other key items were plentiful, whether and how disease spread, and how these developments led to different levels of industrialization, and wealth The book â€Å"Guns, Germs, and Steel† was very well written in the sense that Diamond had a question in which was the foundation of the book, he throughout the book acquired evidence and explanations and ideas of how to answer the question. The book had evidence to back it up by explaining how Eurasia had a better opportunity being west to east meaning they had better crop farming. Which led to a growing civilization and soon conquest. The book wasn’t exactly dull or boring but it wasn’t exciting or entertaining either. It was like any other history book it asked a question, then went on to the point. There was an explanation of the main topic which was Yali’s question and evidence that dealt with answering the question. From beginning to end, Diamond stresses that he rea lizes that efforts to compare societies have frequently been used by racists or nationalists to belittle groups or justify mistreatment of them. He argues that his analysis is in fact anti-racism at work because it shows that the white people who enjoy the comforts of modern life are ultimately luckier than, not more deserving than, people in impoverished nations.

Evaluation Essay -- Essays Papers

Evaluation I believe that my writing has grown a lot with in this first semester of college. I was the type of person in college that would write a paper, and not review it, and still turn it in. I would usually receive good grades, but that was on the high school level. Those types of under-developed papers do not receive good grades in college. On a paper that I may have turned in to one of my high school teachers would have got me a B, yet if I turn around and use that same paper now, I would receive no more than a D. That is what I believe should happen at this level in the game. You as an individual must recognize your own mistakes, and correct them on your own. In high school many of my teacher’s would grade a paper, return it with marks on which we should impro...

Adolescent Offender Essay

Lionel Tate, a fourteen year old Florida boy was sentenced to life during March 2001 for killing Tiffany Eunick, a six- year boy during a wrestling match which took place in 1999. Thus he was convicted of first degree murder as the killing was due to aggravated child abuse and he was sentenced to life without parole.   His sentence was questioned by many critics and many wonder how the justice system allows to send a just fourteen year old boy to prison for life. The underlying question in the ongoing debate was that how a juvenile can be awarded punishment similar to their adult offenders. [i] Adolescent can be defined as the stage of life cycle from puberty to maturity ends at the age of majority. Adolescent thus refers to the change in physical system of a human leading to sexual maturity. Many adolescent teenagers without proper support factors can end in the ‘cracks’ and may land in hostile world. Juvenile delinquency means antisocial attitude beyond the control of parents and result in crimes that is punishable with imprisonment. In other words, it is a criminal offense committed by a minor. See more: Analysis of Starbucks coffee company employees essay Rolf Loeber has conducted research on delinquent paths or trajectories and recognized three discrete paths to a criminal career such as 1) the authority conflict pathway 2) The convert pathway 3) The overt pathway; He also recognise that disruptive behavior that starts from in early childhood with truancy ,lying , threat to animals . There were more than 600 murders that were committed by young people aged 12. Thus in the case of Lionel, it starts from early age of 12 and corroborates with Loeber finding under the overt pathway which escalated to aggressive acts beginning with aggression leading to violence i.e. murder. The Lionel may be of suffering from Problem behavior syndrome (PBS). People with these syndromes will resort to physical abuse, sensation seeking, and arrogance. Researches reveal that delinquent possessed this inherent behavior from very early young age. Some had resorted to drug abuse and heavy drinking as early as at age of 10 or still younger.   Thus the Rolf Loeber and David Farrington study reveals that early-onset offenders had a disruptive behavior with truancy, lying, cruelty to animals and theft. Thus the attitude of young offenders can be attributed when there is no adequate parental care, the environment of their brought up , inherent characteristics at birth and may also due to Problem behavior syndrome ( PBS) [i] Scott, Elizabeth S, ‘Blaming Youth’, Texas Law Review, Feb, 2003. Dark Lord Essay

Lightning struck the tower pinnacle, and briefy the city’s main square was drenched in light. A violent storm was brewing around the city of Magelan, of the world of Ralon on the choas planes. All around the city the guard, dressed in mail of shadowy black, were attempting in vain to surpress the riots that where in place. People had taken the oncoming storm as a sign from the gods, to rise up and overthrow the evil Maraj who ruled their city. † The foolish mortals have taken our bait, their city is in choas my Dark Lord Iekkob† The bodyless voice echoed around the dim moon-lit entrance chamber of the great palace. Suddenly, with a blaze of flame and inpenitrible black smoke, a figure appeared. Slowly becoming less hazy the figure walked towards the base of the stairs, leaving scorched foot prints in the shining marble floor. As the the figure reached the thresh-hold of the crystal staircase, one of the statues that lined walls lazily walked towards him. The statued man was no longer a granite grey but shrowded in black and dark crimson robes. † My Lord Iekkob † The voice sounded again, but it was no longer bodyless. The statued man spoke it, softly, stealthily, yet clearly. † I am pleased, Liwl, you have fooled these pathetic mortals well. The planes of choas are now aptly named thanks to your teachery. † The one named Liwl smiled at his apparent Dark Lord, who had now come into full focus, his cloak burning fiery red to match the embers glowing in his eyes. † Thank you my Lord, I did as you instructed. Every temple, every priest, believed me their deity and followed my orders without question † † Yes†¦ that is what worries me. As weak minded as those who dwell upon the Ethereal Plane are, they would have sensed an intrusion in one of their temples. Especially by you Liwl, they are especially suspicious of the God of Assains and Thiefs. † For a moment he gazed upwards towards the top of the stairs, almost caustiosly. Then it passed, an air of confidence and power grew about him, and he grew in size as he, with a great sweep of his cloak, transcended the great staircase in one leap. He was closely followed by Liwl, who had climbed the stairs quietly, quickly, making sure to stay in the shadows. † Hey you ! Peasant ! What are you doing inside the palace ! † shouted a guard of the palace, armoured in shining gold mail. The Dark Lord looked at the man running towards him, drawing his schimitar, and laughed. The sound pierced the air, and as it did the guard stopped. With a look of great pain he fell to the floor, blood now pouring from his skin. He lay there squirming, spasming with pain. The Dark Lord stopped laughing, gazed upon his victim, and with a slight movement of his hand incinerated the body. † My Lord, I have found the door ! † shouted Liwl, from the far left of the landing. † Open it Lwil, quickly, we cannot stand for these delays. I fear the Ethereal Planes will know of our plans shortly. † Acting with lightning speed Liwl drew two daggers from inside his cloak, and struck the lock. The very palace shook and with a bolt of lightning he was thrown against the wall at the other side of the landing. † As I suspected, Rezarf you value your God of Time very much. You understand the power she wields†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Liwl GET UP ! † Liwl obdentialy jumped to his feet and followed his master the Dark Lord to the door, now shimmering with arcanic runes. Iekkob drew forth a staff of sort, decorated with skulls of many different races, and tapped the door softly. BOOM The door flew off its hinges, flying through the room it was guarding. † I see you are here Iekkob. I must say I was expecting you when I heard what was happening outside the palace. † Through the smoke and dust the slender figure of a young woman walked towards the Dark Lord. † You are smarter than Rezarf gives you credit, Yholl. Are you sure you will not join me, the God of Time will aid my campaign well. † † You now where my alligance lies. Go back to the Nine Hells and plot with your Daemon servants ! The Gift of Time will only aid Good. † Shouted Yholl, her eyes glowing brightly. † Now leave, you cannot harm me here, you of all people know you can only harm an Ethereal Being on the Ethereal Planes. † † True, but then I do not wish to harm you. You only inherited the power of Time because your predessor lost his powers during the Time of Troubles. And now you to shall walk with the mortals. † Iekkob laughed, that shrill piercing laugh again, and before Yholl could react he had thrust his hand outwards. A beam of light appeared between his hand and Yholls chest, and slowly a sphere of glittering gold moved along it towards him. Yholl let out a scream as the sphere entered the Dark Lord. † It is done Liwl, the God of Time is banished to the mortal coil. And so is the only power Rezarf could use to stop me. † † But sir, why did you not just take the power of time for yourself†¦. or one of your loyal servants. † said Liwl bowing, his long nose almost touching the floor. † Beacuse my†¦ loyal servant † he laughed again, and the mortal Yholl fell wimpering to the floor † I cannot use powers designed for good, and I cannot allow anyone, ESPECIALLY, a loyal servant to posess a power that can stop even me. † And with that he disapeared. Liwl looked around at the debrey around the floor, and the wimpering mortal who was once the powerful God of Tme, and with a swoosh of his shadowy cloak followed his master into nothingness.

buy custom Fox Programming essay

buy custom Fox Programming essay News and sports ought to represent the reality on the ground. News anchors and producers should aim at presenting accurate information to the public who relies on media for information. False information by media personalities may lead to inciting the public. Hatred may also occur when one party receives favours from the media personalities. Unrealistic news will also lead to high expectations by the public, which may never happen. Most people are also sensitive to sports, especially soccer. Such people will expect the media to give the realistic information without any bias. Information should not be distorted in any way. Dramas and comedies, on the other hand, do not have to present reality because they need to be exaggerated to bring out the comic effect. They should, however, consider the societys morals. Movies and comedies should not be controversial like Bart Simpson. Bart portrays a rebellious nature and some conservatives and parents viewed him as a poor role model to the children. The character appears also to be a threat to learning, according to some educators. This is because the boy performs poorly in school, and he seems proud. He also has a negative attitude towards school. Such movies should be avoided, and instead educative movies and comedies should replace them (Plunkett, 2006). Fox channel has been quoted as broadcasting news of personal opinions rather than the reality. The news anchors fondly use the language such as some people are saying, instead of quoting the person who said those words. Information has also been distorted by Fox presenters. For example, an event was portrayed to have had a large audience, yet there were only a few people in attendance. Fox is different from other networks in the way it airs its programs. For instance, it does not air morning and evening news. Fox programming Fox channel presents its programming for up to seventeen hours per day. Most of the programmes get broadcast from, New York, headquarters. Other programs come from the Fox studio on Washington DC. Audio simulcasts get aired on Sirius Satellite Radio, and XM Satellite Radio. Fox also has a website with several web logs and columnists.fox Network stands as one of the best networks in the world, broadcasting a variety of programs; news, sports, comedies, as well as children programs. Fox programs for nineteen and half hours per week. The network provides primetime programming of fifteen hours to its owned and affiliated stations. The prime time is 8-10 pm starting Monday to Saturday, and from 7-10 on Sundays. On Saturdays, late night programming comes between 11 pm to 12.30 am. Programming during the day consists of Fox News Sunday and Weekend Marketplace, on Saturdays. The channel airs sports news on the weekend between 12-4 and 12-8 pm, though not all weekends. Football mainly broadcasts on Sundays between 12-4 pm. Baseball, on the other hand, comes on air between 3.30- 7 pm on Saturdays. News Fox Network, unlike the Big Three networks, does not air national news in the morning and evening. It focuses mainly on its entertainment programs. Fox airs primetime news on separate channels as Studio B and Fox Report. The network broadcasts national election coverage, presidential debates, breaking news, and state of the union address. Fox network does not cover major political convention speeches, aired at 10 pm in the other networks. However, most Fox stations take breaking news briefs. A public affairs show comes on air on Sunday mornings. Fox network provides national, as well as international news for its local affiliates newscasts. Sports Having observed the role of soccer in British Sky Broadcasting, Fox Network believed that Professional Football would make it famous quickly. Fox, therefore, made an offer to National Football League, in 1987, to be paying 13 million dollars per game but, NLF refused the offer and renewed its contract with ABC. Six years later, after the expiry of the contract, Fox offered a $1.58 bid to NFL, for four years. NFL selected the bid bringing to an end the CBS of football. Fox also received rights from the New World Communications to acquire ten of its affiliates. This helped Fox to market its other shows to the newly acquired viewers. Fox Network received over-air-broadcast to National Hockey League, NASCAR auto racing, and Major League Baseball. Fox also aired college football games between 2007 and 2010. In 2011, Fox together with mixed martial arts promoted the Ultimate Fighting Baseball. Childrens programming Airing of childrens programming by Fox started in 1990 with the launch of the Fox Kids Network. Many cartoons and fantasy action programs came on the air. These included Goosebumps, Bobbys World, Power Rangers, The Tick, Indiana, and X-Men. Animated series, which included Tiny Toon Adventures and Batman, got added in 1995. However, 4Kids entertainment stopped being aired due to distribution disputes though they have now been settled (Books LLC, 2010). Observations of fox network News and sports should portray the reality on the ground. Fox network broadcasts unrealistic claims on several occasions. A watchdog group on media matters said that Fox News and TV personalities have the tendency of distorting news. The network uses certain software to manipulate and edit reports from New York Times. In the Tea Party protests, in Washington DC, the network manipulated the footage suc that it appeared as if there were several protesters in the event. Fox and Friends show has also been accused of misleading viewers, by showing that Rasmussen Reports poll results added up to 120% instead of 100%. In 2009, Fox News anchor told the viewers that Michigan had a large turn out during Sarah Palin book signing. The news showed that a former vice presidential candidate continued drawing large crowds while Sarah promoted her new book. He added that those pictures came in shortly, yet they had been shown in the morning broadcast. Later it came to peoples notice that these pictures came from McCain/ Palin campaign rally of 2008. Fox vice president later said that was a production error and that the video had not been updated. Fox apologized on air the following day calling it a video error. He added that the network had no intentions to mislead the general public. Fox apologizes more times than the other large networks. The network also apologized to John Kerry, in 2004, because of a certain article that appeared on their website. They argued that the article appeared on the website as a Friday joke. A report written in 2006 by the project on Excellence in Journalism indicated that 68% of Fox stories did not represent the reality. They mainly contained personal opinions, and that the network was more one sided as compared to other networks. MSNBC personal opinion was 27%, and that of CNN was 4%. Fox reporters and anchors do not cite an anonymous source. Instead, they use the phrase "some people say" so that they can include their own opinions and comments. A Pew Research conducted in 2007, to get the viewers political knowledge, revealed that Fox viewers scored 35%. CNN viewers scored 41% while O'Reilly Factor viewers scored 51%. Rush Limbaugh viewers scored 50%, NPR got 51%, Major Newspapers scored 54%, and the Daily show scored 54%. Stanford University carried a survey in the year 2010. Regarding scientific claims, about global warming, most Fox viewers rejected such claims. Another survey conducted by Kaiser Family Foundation, regarding health misperception, found that Fox News viewers score was lower as compared to other news viewers. Public misperceptions also proved to be with Fox viewers. Ohio State University carried a study on "Ground Zero Mosque" in the year 2010. The results revealed that 66% of Fox News viewers believed in incorrect rumor that those who did not rely on Fox News. Misperceptions can be noted on Fox News viewers since the network is believed to be biased. PIPA study found out that viewers of Fox News received false and misleading information regarding 2010 election. Viewers appeared misinformed on issues as compared to viewers of other networks (Liz, Jenna Nicole, 2010). Some critics and observers of Fox News discovered some bias where the channel was favoring Republican Party rather than being neutral. In his documentary film, Robert Greenwald argues that Fox suffered from conservative bias. The documentary being referred to in this case is Outfoxed: Rupert Murdochs War on Journalism. The film uses Fox News clips, and internal memos directing on how to report. During the Health care reform in the US, a leaked memo from Fox asked the staff to use terms phrases such as whenever possible, government option, or, government-run-health insurance. He argued that using such terms would split the American people making them rise against the government. Another bias came in Pew research poll of 2009. The results showed that the channel was the most ideological in America. Among those interviewed, 47% agreed that Fox presented conservative news. Ranking second was MSNBC with 36%, followed by CNN with 11%. Fox programming impact on the society Some of the Fox network movies have portrayed imperfect image of the network. Bart portrays his rebellious nature, and the boy does not receive punishment for his mischief. Some conservatives and parents viewed Bart as a poor role model to the children. The character appears also to be a threat to learning, according to some educators. This is because the boy performs poorly in school, and he seems proud. He also has a negative attitude towards school. Bart also appears to be mean spirited. Some people describe the character as frustrated, confused and angry, hence a poor role model to children. In fact, George Bush clearly said that his government aimed at strengthening families, and making them less of Simpsons. Some other scholars openly said that the Bart Simpsons episodes were disrespectful to the audience. Russia, Venezuela, and China have banned the airing of its episodes, and asked the media to replace it with educative programs to the children. Fox decided not to carry scheduled events including presidential speeches, which brought a lot of criticism. It would only air its regular entertainment programmes while the other channels would bring such live speeches. The network has also been surrounded by controversy due to obscenities in Nicole Richie and Cheer. The obscene parts received criticism from both the television council and the parents. The scenes come out as the worst scenes on TV between the period of 2001 and 2004. Members of PTC do not like some Fox broadcasts and have filed several complaints to the Commission of Federal Communication. The Fox Network has been forced to apologize to the complainants (Macdonald, 2010). The scriptwriter edited the obscene language to avoid future complaints. Many popular shows by Fox receive criticism from Parents Television Council due to its indecent content. American dad, 70s Show, The Simpsons, Hells kitchen, Arreested Development, Prison Break and Married with Children, are some of the shows that have received criticism. The council has at times gone as far as filing complaints with Federal Communications Commission. Fox Network was at one point made to pay a fine of $91,000 for indecent programming. Regarding weekly TV shows, Fox has been referred severally to as having Worst TV Show of the Week. Fox network has been criticized for poor ethics. At one time, Democrats provided a memo to the media. The memo, written by staffers of Republican senator, Mel Martinez brought a lot of controversy. In the memo, he suggested ways by which democrats could gain politically. Fox News producers argued that the memo could be forged by democrats. Senator Mel Martinez later c onfirmed the memo making people question the ethics of Fox network. Fox network has an impact on the society in that most people spend much of their time getting entertained. Entertainment helps people to enjoy life outside their routine work. People like watching news, watching sports, and getting entertained by comedies. Movies, especially soap operas, profoundly affect peoples lives. People tend to expect the love they see in these operas, to be shown to them by their partners. This has, indeed, broken many relationships. Movies such as action movies also influence people by making them violent. The several channels that are available to the viewers have made people lazy as they only sit down watching the programs. Some students have also been not to perform poorly in school since they do not revise when they get to their homes. They only watch their favorite TV programs. Fox network differences to the real world Fox network brought many differences to the real world. For example, it acquired some stations from other networks. This means that those networks, whose stations are acquired, lose popularity. Profits of such networks also reduce notably. Another difference to the real world came when Fox Network started airing NFL, previously aired by ABC network channel. T, therefore, meant that viewers turned to Fox channel to watch soccer. Several other sports such as baseball, basketball, and champions league could also be watched on Fox network. Compared to the Big Three networks, Fox has several differences. The network airs net programming for only two hours during prime time hours. On Sundays, it airs for three hours. The other three networks air for four Sundays and three weeknights at night. Its news is, therefore, broadcast at 10pm Eastern time. Its main aim for this was not to be considered a network be the FCC to avoid regulations. Despite being a prime network, Fox does not air soap operas during the day. Talk shows and game shows are also not aired during the day. They, therefore, offer more syndicated programs such as Judge Alex and Divorce Court. Do not Forget the Lyrics and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader represent the game shows broadcast during the day as syndicated programs (Kimmel, 2004). Unlike the other three large networks, Fox does not air morning or evening news programs given their primetime schedule. However, the network airs presidential debates, state of the union address, national elections, as well as breaking news from time to time. The range of coverage varies from one station to another and, normally, they limit it to the networks events in primetime block. Fox network, unlike the three large networks, does not cover political speeches at 10 pm. All the same, most of the networks stations give briefings on weekday breaking news. Another difference to the real world is that, among all the US broadcasters, Fox Network comes out as unique in the way it distributes its network HD feed. Fox transports its network as an MPEG stream of transport. This stream is usually intended to be delivered to the viewers TV sets bit-for-bit. Local commercials get inserted by use of transport stream plicer. For the three large networks, the affiliates, decode compressed satellite video feed first, and then re-encode them for the final emission over-the-air. Fox is also the only network that airs its programs, in widescreen, on digital feed that is not available in HD. Such programs used to be presented between 2001 and 2006 in Fox High Resolution Widescreen. However, these programs are currently unbranded. It should be noted that Fox network produces entertaining programs. The network has produced many soap operas targeting young audience. The soap operas includes, among others, Beverly Hills, New York Undercover, and Melrose Place. Comedies have also been broadcast be Fox network. For example, the Living Color comedy had outstanding characters, which have remained famous until today. Stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carry, Jimmy Foxx and, Damon Wayans have featured in fox network. MADtv comedy series is yet another comedy that people loved, and it remained a hit for over a decade. The Simpsons also came as a strong program, with many people liking it, despite the fact that many people criticized the movie. They argued that Bart did not act as an admirable role model to the children due to his carefree nature. Fox network broadcasts sports in a different way from other networks. Fox Network got granted rights over-air-broadcast to National Hockey League, NASCAR auto racing, and Major League Baseball. Fox also aired college football games between 2007 and 2010. In 2011, Fox together with mixed martial arts promoted the Ultimate Fighting Baseball. This has made the network famous since a good number of people love sports. The network, therefore, has several viewers who spend time watching sports, as well as watching other programs. Buy custom Fox Programming essay

Explanation of Newspaper Headlines for English Learners

Explanation of Newspaper Headlines for English Learners Many students have difficulty understanding newspaper headlines. This is because newspaper headlines are often incomplete sentences (i.e. Difficult Times Ahead). Here is a guide to the most common exceptions found in newspaper headlines. Noun Phrases Headlines often contain a noun phrase with no verb. A noun phrase describes a noun (i.e. around strange, exotic people). Here are some examples of noun phrase headlines: Under Pressure from BossUnexpected VisitOverwhelming Response of Voters Its useful to ask yourself questions such as: From what? About what? From whom? To whom? etc. when reading these type of headlines. By asking yourself these questions, you can begin preparing yourself for the article. This practice helps the brain prepare itself by starting to think about vocabulary related to the subject. Heres an example: Unexpected VisitThe questions I can ask myself are: From whom? Why was the visit unexpected? Who was visited? etc. these questions will help focus my mind on vocabulary related to relationships, traveling, surprises, important reasons for visits, etc. Noun Strings Another common headline form is a string of three, four or more nouns together (i.e. Country Leader Question Time). These can be difficult because the words dont appear related by verbs or adjectives. Here are some more examples: Widow Pension Pay CommitteeLandscaping Company Disturbance RegulationsMustang Referral Customer Complaint In the case of noun strings, its helpful to try to connect the ideas by reading backward. For example: Mustang Referral Customer ComplaintBy reading backward, I can guess that: There is a complaint made by a customer about a referral program for Mustang cars. Of course, you need to use your imagination for this! Various Verb Changes There are a number of verb changes made to headlines. The most common are: Simple tenses used instead of continuous or perfect forms. For example:Â  Forgotten Brother Appears A forgotten brother has appeared (after a long period of time).Professors Protest Pay Cuts Professors are protesting pay cuts (at the university). The infinitive form refers to the future. For example:Â  Mayor to Open Shopping Mall The mayor is going to open a new shopping mall.James Wood to Visit Portland (Famous actor) James Wood is going to visit Portland soon. Auxiliary verbs are dropped in the passive form. For example:Â  Man Killed in Accident A Man has been killed in an accident.Tommy the Dog Named Hero Tommy the Dog has been named a hero (by the mayor). Drop Articles Perhaps you have noticed in the examples above that both definite and indefinite articles are also dropped in newspaper headlines (i.e. Mayor to Choose Candidate). Here are some more examples: President Declares Celebration The president has declared a celebration.Passerby Sees Woman Jump A passerby has seen a woman jump (into the river).

Cognitive Development Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Cognitive Development Theory - Essay Example Cognitive development is related to socialization. A child's ability to judge social relations and gain sense of morality are largely dictated by his intellectual readiness and interaction with his environment (Levitt, n. d.)Cognitive development theory focuses on the following concerns: the specificity or generalizability of domains in cognitive ability changes; the occurrence and rate of change or the existence of qualitative different stages; the processes occurring in physical or psychological aspect of an individual; and the factors affecting development.Cognitive development theory makes sense of one's environment and physiological conditions at which an individual interacts and functions to provide a system by which the process of learning and teaching might understood and controlled for maximum and optimum cognitive development. On the nature and development of intelligence, cognitive theorists particularly Jean Piaget and Lev S. Vygotsky both consider "the role of environment al factors in shaping the intelligence of children, especially on a child's ability to learn by having certain behaviors rewarded and others discouraged" (Encyclopedia of Childhood and Adolescence). Piaget believed that development proceeds from the individual to the social world.Piaget believes that child's knowledge is composed of schemas, or knowledge units, which serve as basis for organizing past and new experiences. These schemas are continuously defined and redefined through "assimilation" and "accommodation". According to Piaget, learning and understanding concepts can only happen when new things are incorporated into old and previously learned concepts. Otherwise, the schema will change to accommodate new knowledge. According to Piaget, cognitive development is a result of learning. Development occurs due to continuous incorporation of things from previous personal experiences. Learning is individually oriented. Development precedes learning. Piaget believed that intelligen ce arises progressively in the baby's repetitive activities. Vygotsky, in contrast believed that instruction is necessary to attain development. Vygotsky believed that development begins at the social level and moves towards individual internalization. Social and cultural factors are important in the development of intelligence. Through "scaffolding", an adult guided activity, a child learns new things gradually until he reaches new level of understanding. Unlike Piaget, Vygotsky believed that learning precedes development. Vygotsky might have been aware of instances when a child has understood a concept before they can demonstrate their understanding of it. This happens when a child's motor skills are not yet advanced enough or their language skills are not sophisticated enough to indicate their knowledge and mental processes, hence adult guided instruction is recommended to attain development (http://social.jrank.org/pages/145/Cognitive-Development.html). Both theorists however ag ree that development may be triggered by cognitive conflict. Any change in learning skills and knowledge can only happen if the learner has realized the difference and inconsistency with his existing understanding. Like Piaget, Vygotsky believed that children's egocentric speech was an important part of their cognitive development. They differed in their views of the purpose of egocentric speech. Piaget considered egocentric speech suggests that the child is self-centered and unable to consider the point-of-view of others. Vygotsky seen it as a
